Road to Memphis 2011 Print E-mail

As expected a steady stream of blues fans converged on Gilly’s June 26th to hear the blues as heard nowhere else except a blues challenge. 15 acts (7 in the Solo/Duo category and 8 in the Band category) took the stage to give the audience and the Judges 15 minutes of their best. If you’ve never experienced a blues challenge and were unfortunate enough to miss this one (I call it the Chuck E. Cheese for grown-ups) you certainly missed a good one! We were stuffed full of a smorgasbord of different types of blues … from traditional to blues rock … from R&B blues to blues with a gospel feel … all the blues our hearts desired.

And the winners are:
Solo/Duo … Gregg “GC” Clark and Brian Lee

Middletown guitarist and vocalist Gregg Clark joined Cincinnati area bassist Brian Lee on stage for a set of what appeared to be flawless blues. These two long-time area musicians and friends worked together to pull off a win over a tough list of competitors.

Band … Noah Wotherspoon Band

Noah and Company (Rob Thaxton on bass and Brian Aylor on drums) went all out to impress everyone with their blues prowess and with their ability to watch the clock.  After going over the time limit last year much emphasis was put on the 15 minute limit. Their set was a shining example of why they have become a Dayton favorite.

Thanks to all our contestants, judges, volunteers, and sponsors. Congratulations to our “Road to Memphis” 2011 winners. Don’t forget both acts will be playing at our Winter Blues Showcase in January!

DBS Returns to Gilly’s Print E-mail

The Dayton Blues Society held the very first “Blue Sunday” Blues Jam at Gilly’s in August of 2008 with Low Rent Blues hosting. Sunday, May 1st marked the first return to Gilly’s since with plenty of jammers to take over after the host band, The Doug Hart Band, got the show started and everyone warmed up for some good blues. Good to see good friend Gary Gates playing bass for Doug and a greatly welcomed appearance by Ellie Lee!

A Tank Full of Blues at the Filling Station Print E-mail

Miss Lissa and Company played host to the “Blue Sunday” Blues Jam at the Filling Station Sunday, February 13th to a packed house of appreciative players and blues fans. Our first venture into the local establishment was a success starting off with the presentation of the Signature Guitar to raffle winner Darrel Thompson! Congratulations, Darrel. By the time the first set of jammers took the stage it was hard to find a seat and by the end of the evening people were just trying to find a place to stand out of the way of the servers! Thanks to all who made this evening of great blues possible.

Blues Sunday Jam @ W.O. Wrights Print E-mail

On the first really beautiful spring “weekend” day this year the Dayton Blues Society’s “Blue Sunday” Blues Jam was held at W.O. Wrights with some really cool highlights. With a monthly theme of “Rhythm & Blues”, Jimmy Baker & Blues Encounter gave us almost an hour of sweet, soulful blues (many of them originals) that had the crowd swaying with the warm sound to match the outdoor temperature and shouting out encouragement.

Blues For A Cure 2011 Print E-mail

2nd Annual Blues for a Cure a Big Success!

Gilly’s came alive with the sound of Blues on Saturday, March 12th as the Dayton Blues Society and Team Vanderpool presented the 2nd Annual “Blues for a Cure” benefit for the American Cancer Society. As expected the seats were full early to see what some have expressed as THE area blues show of the year. Last year’s benefit at the Xenia Elks had quickly filled the relatively small room which prompted the move to a larger venue for this year event. Even the mighty Gilly’s had trouble holding the capacity crowd as blues lovers continued to show up even as the last band took the stage.

DBS Turns Up The Heat At Gilly’s! Print E-mail

The Dayton Blues Society held the 3rd Annual “Winter Blues Showcase” at Gilly’s Saturday night to a very appreciative crowd.

The packed house cheered the DBS “Road To Memphis” winners, Gary Applegate & Sal Barbera (Solo/Duo category) and Ellie Lee & Blues Fury (Band category) as they laid out a couple of sets of great blues to showcase what they’ll present next week at the International Blues Competition in Memphis, Tennessee. Gary Applegate told me they were extremely delighted to play in front of such a huge crowd that actually listened to everything coming from the stage! He said the audience in Dayton was simply fantastic.
